I don't think torture can ever be reconciled with the teachings of Jesus - no matter how useful the information may be - so there is a choise.

As an American I would say that, yes, seeing a "black president" on TV did help Obama. Trying to calculate exactly how much is probably impossible. And I would like to think that voters would think harder about their choice then just matching what they've gotten used to seeing on TV. But then pop culture is a decent view into the "hive-mind" and what it's thinking. I'd suggest anytime you see something "controversial" on a major network TV show... it's not that controversial and the culture that spawned it is probably more open to accepting it then perhaps they even know themselves.

Hi Evangeline;

Glad to see you writing again.

Religion helps some understand, yet I find as I get a little older I am discovering more by acknowledging and considering that which touches me in life through my senses.

I am convinced and have always been sure that there is an entity that created and watches over us spiritually.

Being a stubborn and argumentative type, I have voiced my frustrations and displeasure with God, but in hindsight that was me not understanding or willing to accept that which is. That which binds us.

Have a great weekend!

Your friend

I agree with you. Spirituality seems to be more of a person's own relationship with a supreme being, or else that personal connection to the spiritual side of our lives.

Religion is a medium to achieve that I think. Spirituality is our spiritual relationship with ourselves and with "god". Religion is simply a word we use to describe/understand the process of seeking that spiritual fulfillment.

Evangeline, I believe the Old Testament is important because it records the story of how imperfect people live in relationship with God. Besides, the entire Bible is one story - God loving his creation and continually pursuing a relationship with his people. God's original covenant with Abraham "Through your seed all nations will be blessed", is fulfilled in the coming of Jesus, who then establishes a new covenant between God and his people based upon faith in him (Jesus). It's not that the old covenant was bad, it was just the precursor to the new. Jesus set us free from the trappings of the old covenant through his death and resurrection. Christians are not necessarily Jewish, but we are children of Abraham. I have found that reading the Old Testament, especially the Psalms, can be quite helpful to me in my relationship to God.
